What should I do during junior year of high school to prepare for college applications?

I’m a current junior and I feel like this is the year that matters most, but I’m not sure what I should actually be focusing on right now. I’m trying to stay on top of classes and activities, and I want to make sure I’m using this year well instead of realizing later that I missed something important.

I’m looking for the main things students should be doing in junior year so they’re in a good position when college application season starts.

Junior year is the key setup year, so the biggest priorities are academics, testing, activities, and relationship-building.

First, keep your grades as strong as possible. Junior-year courses and grades matter a lot because colleges see this as the most recent full year of academic work. If you can, challenge yourself with a rigorous schedule, but not so much that your performance drops.

Second, start narrowing your extracurriculars. You do not need to do everything. It is usually better to deepen meaningful commitments, take on leadership, create something, or make a measurable impact than to collect a long list of random clubs.

Third, build your college list gradually. Start researching schools by size, location, majors, cost, and selectivity. If possible, visit some campuses or attend virtual info sessions so your preferences become clearer before senior fall gets busy.

Fourth, think ahead about recommendation letters. By spring, identify teachers who know you well, usually from core academic subjects. Participate in class and build genuine rapport now so that when you ask later, they can write something specific.

Fifth, make a testing plan if you are considering SAT or ACT scores. Decide whether you want to test, then prep early enough to leave room for a retake.

Sixth, use the summer strategically. Good options include a job, internship, research, volunteering, family responsibilities, a personal project, or academic enrichment. The best summer activity is usually the one that fits your real interests and shows initiative.

Finally, keep a running document of accomplishments, responsibilities, awards, and meaningful experiences. That makes applications much easier later.
