What is the typical early action application timeline from starting the application to getting a decision?

I’m a high school junior trying to figure out when I would need to start everything if I plan to apply early action senior year.

I’m not looking for exact dates for specific colleges, just the usual timeline for when students generally work on essays, ask for recommendations, submit materials, and hear back.

A typical early action timeline starts in the spring of junior year and ends with decisions in December or January.

Most students begin researching colleges and testing plans in March through May of junior year. This is also a smart time to build a college list and note which schools offer early action.

By late spring or early summer, many students start the Common App personal statement and resume or activities list. Summer before senior year is when a lot of early action applicants do the heaviest essay drafting, especially because fall gets busy fast.

Ask for recommendation letters by the end of junior year or very early in senior year, ideally May through September. Teachers usually need several weeks, and asking early is much better than waiting until October.

In August, most application platforms open for the new cycle. August through October is usually when students finalize essays, complete the activities section, request transcripts, and confirm that test scores, if submitting, are sent.

To stay sane, it helps to aim to have your application basically done 1 to 2 weeks before the deadline so you have time for proofreading and technical issues.

After submission, colleges usually mark materials as received over the next few days to couple of weeks. Some schools may request missing items, mid-quarter grades, or portal setup steps.

A practical version is: spring junior year for planning, summer for essays, September to October for polishing and gathering materials, early November for submission, and December or January for results.
