Is Boston University or the University of South Florida generally more affordable to attend?

I’m comparing Boston University and the University of South Florida and trying to estimate which would cost less overall. I’m especially unsure how differences in tuition, living expenses, and typical financial aid affect the total cost of attendance.

The biggest practical tradeoff is Boston University’s much higher private-university sticker price versus the University of South Florida’s far lower tuition, especially for Florida residents. BU’s Boston location also tends to make housing, food, and everyday expenses noticeably more expensive than living in the Tampa area. For most students paying close to published prices, USF will cost substantially less overall.

Financial aid can narrow the gap. BU provides need-based institutional aid and may be much more affordable than its published price for applicants with substantial demonstrated financial need; its net price calculator is the most useful estimate for a particular family. USF also offers need-based aid and merit scholarships, but Florida residents may have access to state programs such as Bright Futures that can make USF especially economical.

Unless BU’s need-based grant or scholarship package reduces its net cost dramatically, USF is the more affordable choice, particularly for an in-state Florida student. Compare each school’s official net price calculator results and exact aid offers rather than comparing tuition alone.
