The biggest practical tradeoff is Virginia Tech’s much lower published cost for Virginia residents versus Boston University’s potentially larger need-based institutional aid. A Virginia resident will normally start with a substantial price advantage at Virginia Tech because public universities charge lower in-state tuition. Boston University is a private university with one tuition rate for all students and a considerably higher total cost before aid, especially once Boston housing and living expenses are included.

Virginia residency matters far more than a small difference in grants or fees.
