Purdue University is typically more affordable overall, especially for Indiana residents and for students who do not qualify for substantial need-based aid from Boston University. Purdue’s published tuition and required fees are usually lower than BU’s, and its West Lafayette cost of living, including housing and everyday expenses, is often less expensive than living in Boston.

Residency is the biggest variable. Indiana residents receive Purdue’s in-state rate, creating a particularly large price advantage. Even for nonresidents, Purdue often begins with a lower total cost of attendance than BU, though out-of-state tuition narrows that gap.

Boston University can become competitive for students with demonstrated financial need because it may provide institutional need-based grants that significantly reduce the billed cost. Purdue offers scholarships as well, but applicants should compare their actual aid packages rather than rely on a school’s average aid figures.

When evaluating offers, use each college’s net price after grants and scholarships, then add costs that may not appear in tuition: health insurance, travel, books, personal spending, and possible annual housing increases. Do not count loans or work-study as discounts, since loans must be repaid and work-study requires earned wages.
