How important are SAT scores in college admissions if the rest of my application is strong?

I'm a junior trying to figure out how much weight colleges actually put on SAT scores compared to grades, course rigor, activities, and essays. My GPA is solid, but standardized testing is not really my strength.

I'm trying to understand whether a lower SAT score would seriously hurt me if the rest of my application is strong.

SAT scores matter, but usually less than grades and course rigor. At most colleges, your transcript is the strongest part of the application because it shows years of performance, not one test day.

If the rest of your application is strong, a lower SAT score does not automatically ruin your chances. Strong grades in challenging classes, meaningful activities, and thoughtful essays can absolutely outweigh a weaker test result, especially at colleges that review applications holistically.

A strong SAT can help confirm your record, but a weaker one is often less damaging when your transcript is excellent.
