What makes a strong Fordham "Why Fordham" supplemental essay?

I'm applying to Fordham and I'm having trouble figuring out what this essay is really supposed to show beyond just saying I like the school.

I've looked at a few example essays online, but a lot of them sound generic to me. I want to understand what actually makes a "Why Fordham" essay strong so I can tell if I'm going in the right direction.

A strong Fordham “Why Fordham” essay shows fit in a way that feels specific, grounded, and personal. The goal is not to prove that Fordham is a good school. It is to show why it is a good school for you, and why you would use what Fordham offers in a purposeful way.

The strongest essays usually connect three things: a real interest or value you already have, a few precise Fordham resources, and a clear picture of how you would engage with them. That means naming things like a particular academic program, Core Curriculum angle, research center, internship access, campus culture, Jesuit values, or opportunities tied to either Rose Hill or Lincoln Center, then explaining why those matter to you specifically.

What makes the essay weak is when it relies on lines any applicant could write, like “great location,” “strong academics,” “diverse community,” or “New York City has many opportunities.” Those can appear, but only if you make them concrete. For example, don’t just say NYC excites you. Explain how Fordham’s location would shape your experience in a way tied to your goals, such as policy internships, arts involvement, finance exposure, or community-based work.

Fordham especially responds well to essays that understand its identity. If you mention cura personalis, service, ethics, interdisciplinary learning, or education of the whole person, make sure it does not sound pasted in from the website. Show how that approach matches how you already learn, lead, question, or contribute.

A good structure is simple: start with the interest or trait you would bring, move into highly specific Fordham opportunities, and show what you would do with them. If you are applying to a particular school or campus, tailor accordingly.
