How should I approach the Fordham "Why Us" essay so it feels specific and not generic?
I'm applying to Fordham and I'm stuck on the "Why Us" essay because I don't want it to sound like I just copied things from their website. I know I need to be specific, but I'm not sure what kinds of details actually make the essay feel genuine.
I'm a senior and I have some real reasons I'm interested in Fordham, but I'm having trouble turning that into a focused response.

The best Fordham “Why Us” essays do not try to cover everything. Pick 2 or 3 reasons that connect clearly to who you already are and what you want to do in college, then explain why Fordham is a particularly good match for those goals.
A strong structure is: what you care about, what at Fordham supports that, and how you would use it. That last part is what keeps the essay from sounding copied from the website. Do not just say Fordham has strong academics, Jesuit values, and New York City access. Show how those things matter to you specifically.
For example, instead of “I want to study in NYC,” write something more like: “I’m drawn to Fordham because I want a campus where classroom learning and the city constantly interact. At Lincoln Center, I could study media while also attending public talks, interning during the semester, and observing how communication works in real institutions around me.” That feels more personal because it shows a purpose.
Good details to use include specific majors, minors, honors programs, student organizations, service opportunities, research centers, study abroad programs, core curriculum elements, or Fordham’s Jesuit emphasis on cura personalis and educating the whole person. But only include details you can connect to your own interests, values, or habits.
A useful test is this: if you could swap “Fordham” with another school name and the essay still works, it is too generic. If the details only make sense for Fordham and only make sense for you, you are on the right track.
