Which has stronger school spirit: WashU or Northwestern?

Northwestern has the more visible, athletics-centered school spirit, particularly for students who want regular game-day energy and a recognizable campus-wide sports identity. Its Big Ten membership creates a larger stage for football, basketball, and other varsity events, with students rallying around the Wildcats in purple at Ryan Field and Welsh-Ryan Arena. WashU has enthusiastic students and well-attended traditions, but its Division III athletics culture is less likely to organize the social calendar in the same way.

Northwestern’s spirit extends beyond varsity sports through major shared events such as Dance Marathon, which brings together a large student community around fundraising and performance, and Dillo Day, its longstanding student-run outdoor music festival. Homecoming, alumni events, residence-hall communities, and campus programming also give students recurring opportunities to wear school colors and participate in broad campus traditions.

At WashU, the strongest all-school traditions tend to be social and community-oriented rather than sports-driven. WILD, the campus concert event, and Thurtene Carnival, a student-run spring carnival, are distinctive and popular; Bear sports can attract devoted support as well. The overall atmosphere, however, is more likely to feel centered on student organizations, residential life, and those signature events than on weekly athletic competition.

For someone who specifically wants crowds, rivalry-style visibility, and sports as a recurring source of campus unity, Northwestern is the clearer match. WashU can still provide plenty of school pride, especially around its traditions, but it is a different, less game-day-focused version of spirit.
