At UVA, the Corner sits immediately beside Grounds, and Charlottesville’s Downtown Mall, restaurants, music venues, and community events are easier to fold into an ordinary week.

Ithaca feels like a true small college town: independent bookstores, coffee shops, local food, outdoor recreation, and a notably progressive, artsy culture. Students do go downtown to the Ithaca Commons, but the steep geography and winter weather can make campus feel separated from the rest of town, especially without a car. It also has more of a Southern college-town energy, including strong UVA traditions and a visible alumni presence. Charlottesville is not a major city, but it tends to feel less isolated than Ithaca and offers easier access to broader Virginia destinations.

Choose UVA if you want student life to spill more naturally into restaurants, entertainment, and a broader local community; for most students prioritizing an active, connected college-town atmosphere, Charlottesville has the edge.
