For easier access to a city, a major airport, and a wider range of off-campus options, Duke’s Durham location has the advantage; Cornell offers a more immersive, scenic college-town environment. Durham is part of North Carolina’s Research Triangle, with Raleigh and Chapel Hill nearby, while Ithaca is a smaller, more geographically isolated city in upstate New York.

Duke students can reach downtown Durham quickly, and the area has restaurants, music venues, minor-league sports, internships, and cultural events beyond campus. Raleigh-Durham International Airport is relatively close, and regional transit and ride-sharing make it practical to explore the Triangle without owning a car.

Cornell sits on a hill above Ithaca, with dramatic gorges, waterfalls, Cayuga Lake, and the Finger Lakes region immediately around it. Downtown Ithaca has independent restaurants, coffee shops, bookstores, and the seasonal farmers market, but it feels distinctly smaller and quieter than Durham. Ithaca makes outdoor activities especially convenient: hiking, swimming, skiing trips, lake activities, and vineyard visits are realistic weekend plans, but winters are colder, snowier, and longer. Durham has milder weather and a more urban-suburban rhythm, with easier access to professional opportunities and events throughout the Triangle. Cornell’s setting feels more contained and nature-centered, whereas Duke students can move more readily between a residential campus and an active metropolitan region.
