Is Georgetown or USC better for a career in Washington, DC?

The biggest practical tradeoff is daily access to Washington institutions at Georgetown versus USC’s broader Southern California network and campus experience. Georgetown students can intern during the academic year with congressional offices, federal agencies, advocacy groups, think tanks, embassies, and political consulting firms without leaving campus life. Its School of Foreign Service, Government Department, McCourt School of Public Policy, and Washington-focused alumni base make the path into policy and politics unusually direct.

At Georgetown, networking is built into the setting: speakers, part-time internships, faculty connections, and alumni events often involve people actively working in DC. That proximity is particularly valuable for a student who wants to test several areas, such as legislative work, international affairs, campaigns, or public policy, before graduating. Georgetown also has a well-established reputation among employers in government and policy-oriented organizations.

USC can still lead to a Washington career, especially through political science, public policy, communications, business, or entertainment-policy interests. Its alumni network is extensive and influential, but it is centered more heavily in Los Angeles and California. A USC student would likely need to be more intentional about pursuing DC summer internships, a semester in Washington, and relationships with alumni working on the East Coast.

For the specific goal of beginning a career in Washington politics or public policy, Georgetown has the clearer advantage. USC is a compelling option when you want to combine politics with California-focused opportunities, media, business, or a larger West Coast professional network.
