CMU’s School of Design has a long-established undergraduate design curriculum with substantial emphasis on interaction design, systems thinking, research, prototyping, and critique. Its broader computing environment, including human-computer interaction coursework and collaboration with computer science students, is especially valuable for students aiming for digital product roles.

At USC, the most relevant route depends heavily on the program. The Iovine and Young Academy is particularly compelling for students who want to build products at the intersection of design, technology, and business, while USC’s design, engineering, and communication resources can support different versions of a UX career. Being in Los Angeles can also make internships and networking more accessible in entertainment, consumer technology, gaming, media, and startups. USC may be the more attractive environment for someone whose definition of product design includes branding, storytelling, creative technology, or launching ventures.

USC can be an excellent alternative when its particular program better matches your interests and you expect to take advantage of the Los Angeles ecosystem, but it may require more intentional course selection and self-direction to assemble the same depth of UX preparation.
