How does transferring from a community college to a UC work?

I'm a high school student trying to understand the community college to UC path because it seems like a possible option for me if I don't go straight to a four-year school.

I'm mainly confused about how the transfer process is structured, like what you have to do at community college before you can apply and what makes someone eligible to transfer to a UC.

The basic UC transfer path is: attend a California community college, complete the required transferable coursework, meet the minimum GPA and eligibility rules, then apply to transfer for junior standing, usually after 2 years.

For most students, that means finishing at least 60 UC-transferable semester units, or 90 quarter units, by the end of the spring before transfer. You also need the required general education and major preparation courses for the UC campuses and majors you want.

The biggest thing is major prep. For example, a biology, engineering, business economics, or computer science applicant often needs a very specific set of classes completed before transfer. Missing those can hurt you more than just having a slightly lower GPA.

A very useful tool is ASSIST.org. That shows which community college classes satisfy major requirements for each UC campus. If you were seriously considering this path, I would treat ASSIST as essential planning.

There are also structured transfer options. TAG, or Transfer Admission Guarantee, lets students at participating California community colleges secure guaranteed admission to one of several UC campuses if they complete the required courses and GPA. Not every UC offers TAG, and some majors are excluded, but it can be a strong option.

Another program is the UC Transfer Admission Planner, where students can track coursework and progress. Some community colleges also offer honors or transfer alliance programs that can help.
