For most California residents, UCSD starts with the more favorable price because you would pay the UC resident rate, while WSU would bill you at its nonresident rate. UCSD students who qualify for need-based aid may also be eligible for programs such as Cal Grant and UC’s Blue and Gold Opportunity Plan.

Housing can narrow the gap, but it rarely reverses it on its own. San Diego is an expensive rental market, and living off campus near UCSD can be costly; Pullman is typically less expensive for housing and day-to-day spending. Still, WSU’s nonresident tuition is a substantial added cost, and California residents are not normally eligible for Washington’s resident-based state aid.
