Is UC San Diego or Boston University more affordable for most students?

For most students, UC San Diego is more affordable for California residents, while Boston University can sometimes be competitive only if a student receives strong need-based aid or merit aid. UC San Diego benefits from California public university tuition, which makes its sticker price much lower for in-state students. Boston University is a private university with a higher published cost of attendance, especially once tuition, housing, and fees are included.

Residency is the biggest differentiator. If you are a California resident, UC San Diego is usually the cheaper option by a wide margin because in-state UC tuition is heavily subsidized compared with BU’s private-school pricing. If you are not a California resident, that advantage shrinks a lot because UCSD’s nonresident tuition adds a major extra charge.

Financial aid works differently at the two schools, and that is where BU can become more affordable for some families. Boston University can offer substantial institutional need-based aid, and some applicants also receive merit scholarships, so a lower-income or especially strong applicant may see BU come in below its sticker price by a lot. UC San Diego also offers aid, but public universities often have less flexibility to discount for out-of-state students than private universities do.

Housing and living costs matter too, but they usually do not reverse the basic pattern. Both schools are in expensive urban or near-urban markets, and room, board, and personal expenses are significant at each. Even so, for an in-state California student comparing typical net cost scenarios, UC San Diego is usually the more affordable starting point.
