Is UC San Diego or UC Berkeley more affordable after financial aid?

The biggest practical difference is housing: UC Berkeley’s Bay Area location typically makes room, food, and everyday living costs higher than UC San Diego’s, even though both campuses charge the same UC systemwide tuition for California residents. Campus-based fees and published cost-of-attendance budgets differ somewhat, but housing is usually the expense that creates the larger gap. For a student receiving similar need-based aid at each school, UC San Diego will often produce the lower net cost.

Need-based aid is calculated separately from each campus’s cost of attendance and your family’s financial information. A higher Berkeley budget can result in a larger aid offer, but that does not automatically erase its higher housing and personal-expense estimates. Compare the actual net-price calculator results and, once available, the two financial-aid offers rather than comparing grant totals alone.

Also look at whether each award expects you to live on campus, in off-campus housing, or at home, because that choice can substantially change the bill. UC grants and the Blue and Gold Opportunity Plan can make tuition far more manageable for eligible California students at either campus, so the remaining difference is often rent, food, transportation, and any loans or work-study included in the package.

Absent a meaningfully larger Berkeley grant, UC San Diego is more likely to be the more affordable option after aid. Berkeley can be equally affordable or less expensive in an individual case if its final grant package is substantially stronger, so the award letters should be the deciding evidence.
