The Five College Consortium adds opportunities at nearby campuses, but Amherst itself remains a distinctly small-campus environment. Northeastern can be highly social, especially through residence halls, identity and interest organizations, athletics, and co-op networks. Its location also means friendships may revolve around exploring Boston rather than staying on campus. The community can be less automatic: students often need to make an intentional effort to find their circles, and co-op can temporarily separate friends as people work in different places and follow different schedules.

For the most consistently close-knit, campus-centered daily experience, Amherst is the clearer choice. Northeastern may suit someone who wants community but also values a larger network, professional momentum, and the independence of city life.
