Northeastern vs. Amherst: Which College Offers Better Undergraduate Teaching?

For undergraduate teaching and personal academic attention, Amherst offers the more consistently student-centered experience. Its small liberal-arts setting is built around undergraduates, so professors’ primary classroom responsibility is teaching Amherst students rather than dividing their time across large graduate programs. Classes tend to be smaller, especially beyond introductory courses, and discussion, close reading, feedback, and faculty-led mentorship are central to the academic model.

Faculty access is also more structurally built into Amherst. Students commonly get to know professors through seminars, office hours, advising, independent research, and departmental events, and it is realistic to have multiple faculty members who know your work well enough to write detailed recommendations. Amherst’s open curriculum can strengthen that relationship because students have unusual freedom to pursue interests across departments and often rely on faculty guidance to shape an individualized course plan.

Northeastern has many excellent and engaged professors, but its experience is more variable by college, major, and course level. As a larger research university, it can have bigger introductory classes and more use of teaching assistants, particularly in popular STEM, business, and computer science courses. Students who actively attend office hours and seek research or project opportunities can still form strong faculty relationships, but those connections are less automatic.

Northeastern’s distinctive advantage is experiential education: the co-op system integrates academic study with substantial professional work, and faculty may support students through career-connected projects. That is a major educational strength, but it is not the same as the consistently intimate, faculty-centered classroom environment Amherst is designed to provide.
