Is UVA or the University of Florida more affordable for an out-of-state student?

For most out-of-state students paying close to the published price, the University of Florida will be substantially more affordable than UVA. Florida’s nonresident tuition and typical total cost of attendance are lower, even after housing, meals, books, fees, and travel are included. UVA’s out-of-state tuition is notably higher, and Charlottesville’s living costs can also add up.

Florida can be an excellent value for nonresidents relative to many public universities, but its most prominent state-funded scholarships, including Bright Futures, are primarily for Florida residents. Out-of-state students should not assume they will receive enough merit aid from UF to offset the nonresident rate; institutional merit awards are competitive and not guaranteed.
