Is Cornell or UC Berkeley typically more affordable for an out-of-state student after financial aid?

For a family that needs substantial assistance, Cornell is often the more affordable net-price option despite its higher sticker price. Its grant aid can reduce the bill substantially when the financial-aid office determines that the family has high demonstrated need. Cornell’s calculation considers income, assets, household size, and other circumstances, so “full need” does not necessarily mean every family will pay the same low amount.

At Berkeley, federal Pell Grants, federal loans, work-study, and outside scholarships can help eligible nonresidents, but they rarely erase the nonresident supplemental tuition charge. Do not assume a student can become a California resident after enrolling: residency for UC tuition purposes has strict requirements, and attending Berkeley itself does not establish residency.

Compare each school’s official aid offer rather than the headline cost, paying particular attention to grant amounts, required loans, work expectations, health insurance, and annual increases in tuition or housing.
