Is UVA or Purdue more affordable for an engineering degree?

For an Indiana resident, Purdue will usually have the lower total cost for engineering because its resident tuition and travel costs are likely to be much lower than attending UVA as a nonresident. For a Virginia resident, UVA is often less expensive because Virginia residents pay the in-state rate and UVA’s need-based aid program is notably strong. For students who would be nonresidents at both schools, Purdue often has the lower published cost of attendance, but financial-aid offers can change the result.

The meaningful comparison is each school’s full cost of attendance: tuition and engineering-related charges, mandatory fees, housing and food, books and supplies, health insurance if needed, transportation, and personal expenses. Charlottesville and West Lafayette can also produce different travel and off-campus housing costs, so use each college’s estimate but adjust the transportation line for your home location.

UVA may be particularly affordable for a Virginia student with demonstrated financial need, since it commits substantial institutional aid to eligible domestic students. Purdue can be compelling for an Indiana student, but merit aid is competitive and should not be assumed before it appears in a written offer.

Compare the final net price, not the sticker price: subtract grants and scholarships that do not need repayment, then add any loan amount you would need for all four years. Also check whether a scholarship is renewable and whether it requires maintaining a particular GPA or enrollment status.
