Is UVA or Stanford better for getting a computer science job?

Stanford students are surrounded by major technology employers, venture-backed startups, and peers building companies, which can make internships and early-career networking more visible and accessible. UVA’s computer science program is well regarded, and its engineering students can pursue strong opportunities in software, cybersecurity, data, government technology, and defense-adjacent work in the nearby D.C. and Northern Virginia corridor.

For pure software-engineering recruiting, Stanford has the broader national advantage. Its name recognition is especially powerful with highly selective technology firms and startups, and the campus ecosystem makes it easier to encounter founders, investors, research labs, and recruiters during the school year. Stanford still requires students to build projects, perform well in technical interviews, and secure internships.

UVA can still lead to excellent software jobs, especially for a student who uses career fairs, alumni connections, coursework, hackathons, and internships intentionally. A motivated UVA CS student with strong programming ability and relevant experience can compete for many of the same roles as a Stanford student, although Stanford may provide more built-in pathways to the most competitive companies and startup opportunities.

With career access as the main criterion and cost not creating a major burden, Stanford is the stronger choice for computer science employment. UVA becomes a compelling alternative when it is substantially more affordable or when you are drawn to its public-university environment and the Northern Virginia/D.C. technology ecosystem.
