Compare the offers line by line, beginning with grants and scholarships, not the total aid headline. Subtract only gift aid from each school’s billed charges, then add realistic indirect costs: books, travel home, health insurance if needed, winter clothing, personal expenses, and any cost difference between campus housing and alternatives in later years. Work-study is useful but is not a tuition discount; it represents earnings you would need to make during the year.

Also check whether either package includes federal loans, and what assumptions each college used for your family contribution. Ask each financial-aid office to explain any major difference and, if the other school’s net price is materially lower, submit that competing offer in a respectful reconsideration request. The decision should be based on the amount your family would need to pay or borrow each year multiplied across four years, not just the first-year balance.
