Is Columbia or UMass Amherst generally more affordable after financial aid?

For a student with substantial demonstrated financial need, Columbia can be as affordable as, or less expensive than, UMass Amherst, especially if you would attend UMass as an out-of-state student. UMass Amherst has a much lower published price for Massachusetts residents, but it does not promise to meet every student’s full calculated need.

Columbia is the more plausible low-net-price outcome for a family with modest income and limited assets, even though its sticker price is far higher. Its aid calculation uses the CSS Profile in addition to federal forms, so home equity, savings, business ownership, and other family circumstances can affect the result.

UMass Amherst may come out cheaper for a Massachusetts resident whose family does not qualify for enough need-based aid at Columbia, or who receives a significant UMass scholarship or state grant. Its in-state tuition structure creates a meaningful baseline advantage. For out-of-state applicants, however, UMass can be expensive, and its aid may leave a larger gap than Columbia’s need-based package.

The practical answer should come from each school’s net price calculator, using the same income, asset, and household information. Compare the estimated annual net cost after grants and scholarships, then note whether either estimate includes loans or work-study.
