For students with substantial demonstrated financial need, Northwestern is more likely to be the more affordable option after aid because it commits to meeting 100% of demonstrated need for admitted domestic students. Northwestern also bases its aid primarily on need and has a no-loan policy in its standard financial-aid packages, so eligible students typically receive grants, scholarships, and work-study rather than required federal loans. University of Miami can become less expensive only when its merit awards or need-based package are especially strong.

Miami does offer both need-based assistance and competitive merit scholarships, including several large awards. Those scholarships are not guaranteed, however, and many are awarded through a highly selective review process. Miami’s financial aid can therefore vary more widely between applicants with similar family circumstances than Northwestern’s need-based aid.
