Is Northwestern or Columbia generally more expensive to attend after financial aid?

The biggest practical tradeoff is that Columbia’s New York City setting can raise day-to-day living and travel costs, while Northwestern has limited merit scholarships that can reduce the price for some students who do not qualify for much need-based aid. For students with substantial demonstrated financial need, both schools commit to meeting full demonstrated need under their own formulas, so the final difference can be much smaller than the published cost of attendance suggests. Neither school should be assumed to be cheaper based on tuition alone.

Columbia’s official budget tends to include higher allowances for personal expenses and transportation because of its Manhattan location. Housing and meals are billed through the university for students living on campus, but off-campus choices, flights or trains home, and everyday spending can still make Columbia cost more in practice. Northwestern’s Evanston location is typically easier to manage on a tighter personal budget, although students who frequently go into Chicago can still spend significantly.

Financial aid calculations matter more than the sticker price. Both schools use detailed family financial information, including income, assets, household size, and sometimes noncustodial-parent information, rather than relying solely on FAFSA results. Northwestern’s merit awards can matter for families with lower demonstrated need, but a merit scholarship often does not reduce the net cost dollar-for-dollar for a student already receiving a full need-based package. Columbia undergraduate aid is primarily need-based rather than merit-based.

For a family receiving significant aid, the official award letters and each school’s net price calculator are the meaningful comparison; for a family with limited need, Northwestern may have the better chance of a lower net price if it offers merit funding.
