Is UT Austin or Tulane more affordable for out-of-state students?

For an out-of-state student paying close to the published price, UT Austin is typically more affordable than Tulane. UT Austin’s nonresident tuition and Austin living costs are still substantial, but Tulane’s private-school tuition, fees, and New Orleans cost-of-attendance budget usually begin noticeably higher. The calculation can reverse, however, for a student who earns a large Tulane merit award or receives strong need-based aid from Tulane.

UT Austin’s merit aid for nonresidents exists but is competitive, and out-of-state students should not assume they will receive enough scholarship money to make the price comparable to Texas resident tuition. Austin housing can also be expensive, particularly near campus, so include rent, transportation, and annual increases in the comparison rather than focusing only on tuition.

Tulane makes the most financial sense for applicants with a realistic chance at its named merit scholarships or a financial-aid package that substantially reduces the initial price. Tulane offers several competitive merit programs, including awards that can be very large, but they are not automatic and should not be treated as guaranteed. Its aid offer may make it less expensive than UT Austin for some families, despite the higher sticker price.

Compare each school’s official net price calculator results, then use the actual aid letters to compare four-year net cost. Include whether scholarships renew each year, required GPA or enrollment conditions, health insurance, travel home, and realistic off-campus housing costs. Until Tulane provides a strong award, UT Austin is the safer assumption for the lower out-of-state price.
