Is UT Austin or Georgia Tech more affordable for out-of-state students?

The biggest practical tradeoff is that Georgia Tech typically has the lower published out-of-state cost of attendance, while UT Austin can become far less expensive only for the relatively small group of nonresidents who earn a qualifying scholarship that brings a Texas tuition waiver. Without that waiver, UT Austin’s nonresident tuition and required fees are usually substantially higher than Georgia Tech’s. Housing, food, books, transportation, and personal expenses are meaningful at both schools, but they do not usually erase Georgia Tech’s tuition advantage.

Neither institution should be assumed to meet full demonstrated financial need for every out-of-state student, and large merit awards are not routine at either school. At UT Austin, a nonresident who receives at least a qualifying competitive scholarship may be eligible for resident tuition treatment, which can dramatically change the comparison. That outcome is valuable but competitive, so it should not be treated as guaranteed when budgeting. Georgia Tech also offers scholarships, but most out-of-state applicants should plan around its standard nonresident price unless they have an award in writing.

Recalculate using each school’s official offer once it arrives, paying particular attention to any UT Austin scholarship-linked tuition waiver and to renewable versus one-time awards.
