Which is the better early decision choice for my admission chances: Columbia or Dartmouth?

The biggest practical tradeoff is that Columbia’s application needs to make a convincing case for an intensely urban, interdisciplinary education in New York City, while Dartmouth’s needs to show that you would thrive in a smaller, highly residential undergraduate community with a strong sense of place. Both schools offer binding Early Decision, and both attract exceptionally qualified applicants, so neither is a reliable “easier” ED option. Applying ED only helps when it is clear that the college is your first choice and your application makes that choice believable.

At Columbia, a strong application often connects your academic interests to the Core Curriculum, the resources of New York, and the specific ways you would engage across the university. Its required short responses make generic claims about loving a city or wanting academic rigor especially easy to spot. Dartmouth is also academically demanding, but its admissions readers may be looking more closely for evidence that you will contribute to a close-knit campus culture and engage with its outdoors-oriented setting or tight undergraduate community in a genuine way.

Do not choose based on rumors about which ED round has better odds. Institutional priorities, recruited athletics, legacy status, financial-aid needs, intended field, school context, and the strength of that year’s applicant pool can all affect outcomes in ways applicants cannot predict.

For admission chances, the better ED choice is the one where your record and essays create the more specific, credible fit. Choose Columbia only if its city-based academic ecosystem and Core are truly central to what you want; choose Dartmouth if its residential community and undergraduate-centered experience are the clearer match. A more authentic Dartmouth case can be stronger than a forced Columbia case, and the reverse is equally true.
