Use Early Decision at Duke unless Columbia’s Core Curriculum, New York City setting, and particular academic opportunities are central enough that you would regret giving them up. Duke tends to offer the more self-contained undergraduate experience: a cohesive residential campus, prominent school spirit, and an easier separation between college life and a major city’s distractions. Columbia is the right ED choice when its distinctive structure and location are essential to how you want to learn and live.

Academically, Columbia’s Core requires every student to take a shared sequence of literature, philosophy, art, music, science, and writing courses. That can create unusually rich classroom conversation, but it also means less early curricular flexibility. Duke’s Trinity College curriculum leaves more room to explore across departments, while Pratt is especially structured for engineering; Duke also makes it relatively accessible to combine fields through majors, minors, certificates, and research.

The daily environments are sharply different. Columbia places you in Morningside Heights with Manhattan internships, museums, speakers, and city life immediately available, but its campus can feel more integrated with the surrounding city and less traditionally collegiate. Duke’s Gothic West Campus, East Campus first-year experience, gardens, athletics, and Durham setting create a more enclosed social center, with Research Triangle opportunities nearby rather than at your doorstep.

Because ED is binding, compare the official net price estimates and each school’s aid policies before applying. Apply early only where the cost is workable and where you would enroll without needing to compare other admission results.
