Should I choose Yale Single-Choice Early Action or Columbia Early Decision?

For most students who are still weighing Yale against Columbia, Yale Single-Choice Early Action is the more sensible early option because it preserves your ability to compare regular-decision offers. Choose Columbia Early Decision only when Columbia is your unequivocal first choice, you would enroll if admitted, and its likely cost is workable for your family. Yale’s SCEA decision is nonbinding, while Columbia’s ED agreement requires enrollment if admitted.

An applicant admitted through Yale SCEA can still apply to and consider other colleges during regular decision, including Columbia, before making a final choice in the spring. An applicant admitted through Columbia ED must promptly withdraw other applications and cannot wait to see whether Yale or another school offers admission or a different aid package.

Use Columbia ED when your preference is based on specific, durable reasons such as its Core Curriculum, Manhattan setting, a particular academic program, or a community you have explored closely. Do not use ED primarily because you believe it will make admission easy; both Yale and Columbia are exceptionally selective, and an early plan should reflect a real enrollment decision rather than a tactical gamble.
