For hiking, skiing, and coastal paddling, UNH has the more natural geographic advantage. BU is better positioned for students who want outdoor time alongside Boston’s cultural, internship, and transit opportunities.

At UNH in Durham, students can readily use nearby trails, conservation land, the Oyster River, and the New Hampshire seacoast. The White Mountains and several ski areas are realistic day or weekend trips by car, and the university’s Outdoor Adventures program organizes excursions and provides access to equipment and instruction. Kayaking, paddleboarding, and sailing are especially accessible around the Seacoast and Great Bay area, though students without cars may need to rely on organized trips or friends for the farther destinations.

BU has unusually good in-city water access through the Charles River, including its Sailing Pavilion, and running, cycling, and paddling can be part of a normal week. Larger hiking areas such as the Blue Hills or Middlesex Fells are reachable for day outings, but serious hiking and skiing in New Hampshire or Vermont require a longer trip and more logistics. BU’s urban location also means fewer spontaneous trail or ski days.

For a student who considers hiking, skiing, kayaking, and frequent time in nature central to college life, the University of New Hampshire is the better match. Boston University can still support an outdoors-oriented student, particularly one who values river activities and is comfortable reserving bigger outdoor adventures for planned weekends.
