Is Duke or UNC-Chapel Hill harder to get into?

The biggest practical difference is that Duke is a private university selecting from a highly competitive national and international pool, while UNC-Chapel Hill gives North Carolina residents a meaningful admissions advantage as the state’s flagship public university. For a North Carolina applicant, UNC is still very selective, but its enrollment policies reserve most undergraduate seats for in-state students. Duke does not have that residency preference, so North Carolina applicants face essentially the same level of competition as applicants from anywhere else.

Both schools use holistic review and expect strong coursework, grades, recommendations, activities, and essays. At Duke, applicants typically need to distinguish themselves within a pool filled with students who have excellent academic records and substantial accomplishments. At UNC, an in-state applicant is evaluated in a context that includes North Carolina high-school opportunities and the university’s public mission; a strong record in rigorous available courses matters greatly.

For a North Carolina resident, Duke is generally harder to get into than UNC-Chapel Hill. UNC remains a reach for many strong in-state applicants, while Duke should be treated as an even more selective reach.
