Which is harder to get into: Duke or Harvard?

Harvard is generally considered harder to get into overall. Both Duke and Harvard are among the most selective schools in the country, but Harvard is typically viewed as the more difficult admit because it draws an even broader global applicant pool and has a reputation for being at the very top of the admissions landscape. In most realistic college-list planning, students who are competitive for Duke should still treat Harvard as a bigger reach.

Harvard sits in the rarer category where almost every applicant has top academics, strong activities, and high-level recommendations, so the bar for standing out is exceptionally high. It is not just that applicants are impressive, but that there are so many of them with near-perfect credentials and major accomplishments across academics, research, arts, athletics, and service.

Duke is also extraordinarily hard to get into, and for a student with a strong academic record, leadership, and a clear personal narrative, it can still be a major reach. But Duke’s applicant pool is usually a bit narrower in scale and tends to be slightly less saturated with the same volume of globally recognized applicants that Harvard attracts. That does not make Duke accessible in any easy sense, only somewhat less forbidding at the highest level.

If your goal is to build a realistic list, it makes sense to categorize both as highly selective reaches, with Harvard in the even more unpredictable tier. The practical takeaway is that being “good enough” for Duke does not mean Harvard is comparable in odds, even though both demand exceptional applications.
