Is Duke or Caltech harder to get into?

Caltech is typically harder to gain admission to in the sense that it enrolls a far smaller class and looks for an unusually concentrated level of preparation in advanced math, science, and research-oriented problem solving. Duke is also exceptionally selective, but it admits a much larger and more academically varied group of students across engineering, humanities, social sciences, arts, and preprofessional interests.

Caltech is a particularly demanding fit for applicants whose transcript shows they have pursued the strongest math and science curriculum available, often extending beyond standard high school coursework, and who genuinely enjoy theoretical or technical inquiry. Strong grades alone are rarely enough; the application needs to make clear why the student belongs in an intensely STEM-centered environment.

Duke can be just as difficult for a high-achieving applicant because it receives a very large volume of strong applications and evaluates students across many dimensions. It may make more sense for someone with academic strength plus meaningful involvement in areas such as public policy, writing, service, entrepreneurship, athletics, the arts, or interdisciplinary study. Duke still expects rigorous coursework and excellent performance, particularly for engineering or natural science applicants, but it does not require the narrow STEM depth that Caltech does.
