Is Tufts better than UVA for accessing Boston internships?

The biggest practical difference is that Tufts makes Boston internships realistic during the academic year, while UVA makes them largely a summer, remote, or short-break option. Tufts’ Medford/Somerville campus is close to Boston and connected to the region by public transit, so students can commute to employers in fields such as biotech, health care, nonprofits, finance, startups, media, and research. At UVA, Charlottesville is several hours from Boston, so a regular in-person Boston internship alongside classes would be difficult to sustain.

Tufts students can pursue part-time internships during a semester, attend in-person networking events, and build relationships with Boston-area employers without needing to relocate. Its location also makes it easier to use the broader Greater Boston network, including nearby hospitals, research institutions, companies, and organizations. That proximity does not guarantee an internship, and students still need relevant experience and a focused search, but it removes a major logistical barrier.

UVA has strong career resources, a substantial alumni network, and access to internships in Charlottesville, Northern Virginia, Washington, D.C., and elsewhere. A UVA student could absolutely obtain a Boston summer internship, particularly through independent applications and alumni outreach, but it would not offer the same ability to repeatedly meet employers or work in Boston during the school year.
