Florida State vs. UVA for Political Science: Which Offers Better Preparation for Government Careers?

For a student who wants frequent, practical exposure to state government during college, Florida State has an unusually strong advantage because it is in Tallahassee, Florida’s capital. Political science students can pursue internships with the legislature, executive agencies, advocacy organizations, campaigns, and the courts while classes are in session.

UVA is especially compelling for a student seeking a more nationally oriented academic environment, broad alumni reach, and a potential path toward federal policy, law school, or graduate study. Its politics department is highly respected, and the Frank Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy gives undergraduates access to policy-focused coursework and a distinct public-policy community. Charlottesville is not a government hub in the way Tallahassee is, but UVA students can pursue summer and semester opportunities in Washington, D.C.

The academic preparation at either school can be excellent, particularly if you build quantitative skills through statistics, economics, data analysis, or policy evaluation courses. For government careers, internships, writing ability, and evidence of sustained involvement often matter at least as much as the political science major itself.

FSU makes the most sense for someone who expects to work in Florida politics or wants government experience from the first year onward.
