Is Carnegie Mellon or Ohio State better for finding internships?

The biggest practical tradeoff is concentrated tech recruiting and a highly specialized CS peer network at Carnegie Mellon versus Ohio State’s broader, larger-scale employer ecosystem and Columbus location. Carnegie Mellon’s computer science reputation draws substantial attention from software, AI, robotics, and quantitative employers, and its smaller CS-focused environment can make it easier to find peers pursuing similar technical internships. Ohio State offers access to a major city with employers in technology, finance, insurance, healthcare, manufacturing, and government, alongside a very large alumni network.

At Carnegie Mellon, students who are prepared for technical interviews can benefit from strong on-campus recruiting, career programming, and the visibility of the School of Computer Science. Pittsburgh also has a growing technology and robotics presence. The main limitation is that CMU’s workload can be intense, so students need to manage recruiting early rather than assume the school name alone will produce an internship.

Ohio State has extensive career fairs and engineering-focused career support, and its size means a wide range of employers recruit there. Columbus can be especially useful for internships during the academic year, not just summer roles. Because the student body is much larger, however, students may need to be more proactive about attending fairs, building relationships, and standing out in applications.

For a student specifically targeting competitive software engineering, AI, or robotics internships, Carnegie Mellon provides the stronger built-in advantage. Ohio State can still lead to excellent outcomes, particularly for a student who wants a broader campus experience, lower cost, or access to Columbus employers and is willing to drive the internship search actively.
