Is Carnegie Mellon or UT Austin better for getting a job in Austin after graduation?

For a student whose clear goal is to begin a career in Austin, UT Austin will usually provide the more direct path. Its alumni base is deeply concentrated in Austin and across Texas, and many local employers recruit on campus and hire graduates repeatedly. Being in Austin during the school year also makes it easier to build relationships through part-time work, campus events, and local networking.

Carnegie Mellon carries exceptional national recognition, especially for computer science, engineering, robotics, design, and quantitative fields. A CMU student with strong technical preparation can land an Austin role, particularly at major technology companies or startups that recruit nationally. However, they would need to be more intentional about targeting Austin, pursuing summer internships there, and developing a Texas-based network from Pittsburgh.

Choose Carnegie Mellon only if its particular academic strengths, program fit, or opportunities are meaningfully stronger for your intended field. For example, a student choosing between a highly specialized CMU computer science or robotics program and a less fitting UT program may still find CMU worth it. But when the academic fit is comparable, UT Austin’s local presence and employer relationships give it a practical advantage for starting out in Austin.
