Which Is More Prestigious for Communications: USC or Northwestern?

For communications as a broad, industry-facing field, USC is more commonly viewed as the prestige leader because of the USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism and its unusually deep ties to Los Angeles media, entertainment, advertising, and public relations. Annenberg is a highly visible standalone communications school, so its name is immediately recognizable to many employers in those fields. USC’s location also gives students routine access to internships, guest speakers, alumni, and entry-level opportunities across major media companies.

Northwestern is equally respected at the university level, but its communications-related strengths are distributed across different units. The School of Communication is especially well regarded for communication studies, performance studies, theater, speech and language sciences, and radio/television/film, while Medill carries exceptional name recognition in journalism and integrated marketing communications. A student pursuing reporting or journalism may find the Medill brand at least as powerful, and possibly more targeted, than USC Annenberg.

The distinction is less about one school being universally superior and more about what people mean by “communications.” For journalism, Northwestern Medill is a major credential; for theater, performance, or certain communication-science paths, Northwestern’s School of Communication has a particularly strong reputation.
