NYU vs. University of Chicago: Which Has a Stronger Intellectual Life?

For a campus-centered, consistently intense intellectual culture, the University of Chicago has the stronger intellectual life. Its Core curriculum gives students across majors a shared sequence of foundational texts and questions, so discussions about philosophy, science, politics, and literature extend beyond a single department. Small, discussion-heavy classes are a central part of the undergraduate experience, especially early on.

Chicago’s student culture is unusually identified with argument, close reading, and pursuing ideas for their own sake.
