Which has stronger campus traditions: New York University or Ohio State?

The biggest practical difference is that Ohio State has a centralized, highly visible campus culture built around shared rituals, while NYU’s culture is more decentralized and shaped by New York City, individual schools, and student organizations. At Ohio State, students routinely encounter traditions on game days, around the Oval, during homecoming, and at major university events. NYU has an active student life, but its campus is embedded in Greenwich Village rather than organized around a traditional residential quad and big-time athletics.

Ohio State’s traditions are unusually prominent in everyday student culture. Football Saturdays bring tailgating, Buckeye attire, the marching band’s Script Ohio, “Carmen Ohio,” and widespread campus participation even among students who are not avid sports fans. Events such as BuckeyeThon, homecoming programming, and orientation traditions also create recurring opportunities for students to feel part of a large university community.

At NYU, community tends to form through residence halls, academic programs, cultural organizations, performing arts, and the city itself. Washington Square Park is an important gathering place, but NYU does not have the same schoolwide game-day rituals or singular campus identity that define Ohio State. Its traditions are more likely to be tied to a particular club, college within NYU, or annual event than to the entire undergraduate population.
