Is USC or UC San Diego better for accessing Los Angeles internships?

The biggest practical difference is proximity: USC is in Los Angeles, while UC San Diego is substantially farther away. That makes USC internships easier to fit around classes, attend in person multiple days a week, and continue during the academic year. UC San Diego students can pursue LA opportunities, but many will be more realistic as summer internships, remote roles, or positions requiring a carefully managed commute.

USC’s location puts students close to employers across entertainment, media, startups, finance, consulting, healthcare, nonprofits, and local government. Its career center, school-specific career offices, student organizations, and extensive Southern California alumni community create frequent opportunities for employer events, networking, and referrals in LA. For fields with a particularly LA-centered ecosystem, such as film, television, music, fashion, advertising, and parts of the startup world, being able to meet alumni or attend an interview on short notice is a meaningful advantage.

UC San Diego has strong career resources and a large alumni base, especially valuable in San Diego and in technical fields such as engineering, biotech, research, and computing. Its students do land internships in Los Angeles, but UCSD’s day-to-day employer access is more naturally concentrated in San Diego, with LA networking requiring more intentional travel and planning.

For a student who specifically wants to access LA internships throughout the school year, USC is the more practical choice. UC San Diego makes more sense when its academic offerings, cost, or San Diego-based opportunities outweigh the convenience of being embedded in Los Angeles.
