Which college offers better access to Washington, DC internships: UC San Diego or the University of Maryland?

The University of Maryland offers substantially more convenient access to Washington, DC internships. Its College Park campus sits just outside DC, with Metro access that makes commuting to federal agencies, congressional offices, nonprofits, consulting firms, media organizations, and policy groups realistic during the academic year. UC San Diego students can certainly intern in DC, but most would need to pursue a summer position, take a quarter away, or arrange housing and travel.

Maryland’s proximity matters because DC internships often involve in-person schedules of two or three days per week, networking events after work, and short-notice interviews. Students can build experience gradually across several semesters rather than treating DC as a one-summer destination. The university also has established connections to the region’s public-sector and research employers, especially in government, public policy, cybersecurity, health, engineering, and international affairs.

The Maryland alumni network is particularly useful in the DC–Maryland–Virginia area because many graduates stay locally to work in government and adjacent industries. Campus career programming, employer visits, and faculty connections are more likely to include organizations headquartered in or regularly recruiting from the capital region.

UC San Diego has strong opportunities in science, technology, research, and global issues, but its strongest employer relationships and day-to-day networking ecosystem are concentrated in Southern California. For a student who expects DC internships to be a recurring part of college, Maryland provides the more practical and connected platform.
