UVA vs. UT Austin for Computer Science Job Opportunities

The biggest practical tradeoff is location and employer density: UT Austin places you in one of the country’s most active technology markets, while UVA offers a strong route into the Washington, D.C., Northern Virginia, and broader East Coast recruiting network. For software engineering internships during the school year, Austin’s concentration of tech companies, startups, and major employers can make local networking and in-person opportunities especially convenient. UT Austin also has a large, highly visible computer science community and substantial recruiting activity connected to its engineering and technology ecosystem.

UVA is far from limited on career outcomes. Its computer science students recruit nationally, and the university’s alumni presence is particularly useful in Northern Virginia, D.C., finance-related technology, consulting, government-adjacent work, and established East Coast employers. Charlottesville is a smaller market than Austin, so students seeking frequent local startup events or part-time tech roles may need to be more intentional about traveling, networking remotely, or targeting summer internships elsewhere.

At either school, your results will depend heavily on how early you build experience: attending career fairs, joining technical project teams, using alumni outreach, preparing for coding interviews, and pursuing internships after first or second year. Neither name alone will substitute for a solid project portfolio and interview preparation.
