Is Boston University or Dartmouth better for outdoor activities and access to nature?

Dartmouth offers the substantially stronger outdoor lifestyle and more immediate access to nature. Its Hanover, New Hampshire campus sits in the Upper Valley beside the Connecticut River, with woods, trails, and the Appalachian Trail accessible from or very near campus. The student-run Dartmouth Outing Club is one of the college’s most visible traditions and organizes trips and activities across hiking, climbing, paddling, camping, skiing, and more.

Boston University can still work for someone who likes being outside, particularly along the Charles River Esplanade for running, biking, kayaking, and sailing. However, BU is an urban campus on Commonwealth Avenue, and substantial hiking, camping, and downhill skiing usually require planned travel beyond Boston. It offers excellent city-based recreation and access to New England excursions, but Dartmouth makes the mountains, forests, and winter sports far more central to everyday student life.
