How should I compare Florida State and the University of Washington for computer science?

The biggest practical tradeoff is that the University of Washington offers a much deeper connection to the Seattle technology market, while Florida State can deliver a strong computer science education at a substantially better value for Florida residents and with a more traditional campus experience. UW’s Seattle location puts students near major employers such as Microsoft, Amazon, and a large startup and research community. FSU’s program is academically credible, including an ABET-accredited B.S. option, but Tallahassee has a smaller local tech internship market.

Academically, UW is the more intensive computer science environment. Its Paul G. Allen School has broad strength in areas such as artificial intelligence, systems, data science, human-computer interaction, and research, and its courses tend to connect students with a large, technically focused peer group. That can be especially valuable for a student who wants advanced electives, research, competitive internships, or a path toward graduate school.

The most important UW-specific question is whether you have assured admission to the Computer Science or Computer Engineering major. Do not treat UW as a clear academic advantage until you confirm your actual major status.

FSU can be an excellent choice for a student who will take initiative: pursue upper-level coursework, build projects, use career fairs, seek faculty research, and apply broadly for summer internships beyond Tallahassee. Its Florida connections can be useful for state government, defense, finance, and growing Florida tech markets, although students may need to be more proactive about landing national tech roles.

Assuming you are admitted directly to UW computer science and the additional cost is manageable without major debt, UW has the stronger academic and career platform for CS. If UW admission is not direct, or if FSU is far less expensive, FSU is the more sensible undergraduate decision; strong grades, internships, and a serious project portfolio matter more than paying a large premium for a name alone.
