Is Duke or the University of Michigan more affordable for an out-of-state student?

For most out-of-state students who will pay largely from family savings, income, or standard loans, the University of Michigan is likely to be more affordable than Duke.

Duke can reverse that result for students with significant demonstrated financial need. Duke has a notably strong need-based aid program, meets demonstrated need for admitted students, and its aid policies are designed to limit or eliminate loans for many aided families.

Michigan’s most prominent affordability programs are primarily directed toward Michigan residents, so an out-of-state applicant should not assume they will receive the same level of institutional support.

Compare each school’s net price calculator using the same current family income, assets, household size, and number of siblings in college. Treat merit scholarships as a bonus unless they are already in writing, and compare the four-year projected net cost rather than only the first-year bill.
