Is MIT worth the extra cost compared with McGill?

For most students, MIT is not worth a substantially higher family cost unless the difference can be covered without burdensome debt or major financial strain. McGill offers rigorous, internationally respected STEM programs, strong research access, and a far lower price point for many students. In engineering, computer science, math, and the sciences, a motivated McGill student can build an excellent academic record and reach competitive graduate programs or employers.

MIT’s clearest advantage is the density of specialized opportunity. Its undergraduate culture is built around hands-on research, labs, entrepreneurship, and close proximity to the Boston-Cambridge technology and biotech ecosystem. MIT also has unusually deep institutional connections in certain fields, so students interested in areas such as robotics, AI, aerospace, advanced computing, or startup-building may find more structured pathways to mentors, projects, and early-career networks.

That advantage matters most when you would actively use it. A student who already sees themselves pursuing research with a particular MIT lab, joining a technical venture, or seeking highly specialized industry access may gain enough from MIT’s environment to justify a manageable premium. Reputation can help open an initial conversation, but it does not replace strong grades, technical experience, research, internships, and recommendations.

For graduate school, especially a PhD, minimizing undergraduate debt is important because doctoral stipends are modest. McGill’s affordability can leave room for summer research, internships, graduate study, or flexibility in choosing an early-career job. Compare the actual four-year net cost, including travel, housing, currency effects, and expected borrowing, rather than the published price alone.
